Electronica Artists You Should Listen To

Everybody knows the greats of today’s electronica scene: Above and Beyond, Daft Punk, Tiesto, etc. However, have you taken the time to branch out and find something new? A problem I find with electronica is that some of the sounds can become a little bit stale, and I have to find something new. If this sounds like you, then perhaps you might want to give these three amazing electronica artists a try.

1. Purity Ring

My initial thoughts of the purity ring come from bad high school memories. Upon “Googling” Purity Ring you are either given pictures of the Jonas brothers, or what a purity ring actually is, which is sad. However, dig a little deeper and you’ll learn about these two artists, Megan James and Corin Roddick, that make up the electronica group ‘Purity Ring’. The band was formed in 2010, but it wasn’t until 2012 that they were signed to a record label and released their first album ‘Shrines’, which was insanely popular upon release.
Purity Ring has been called “future beats” and features a unique mix of interesting, danceable beats with soft, dreamy vocals and lyrics that make absolutely no sense. It’s a little like Alice in Wonderland where not everything makes sense, but all you know is that it’s trippy. To see what I mean, I highly recommend the song “Crawlersout”.

2. Mitis

Initially trained as a classical piano artist, Mitis is now trying his hand at crafting crunchy electronica beats and various dubstep songs…and they are all awesome. Situated in Philadelphia, he is now touring and playing at various concerts and festivals, so there is a good chance that you might be able to see him.
Mitis’s classical training in piano has gifted him the ability to make amazing melodies and combine them to fit beautifully with “phat” (his word) bass and awesome beats. His song, “Endeavors” is the best example of this. He is definitely an artist you want to look out for.

3. Pretty Lights

Ok, so I’m sure if you are part of the electronica scene, you have probably heard of Pretty Lights. However, this name still needs to be said. Derek Vincent Smith, the artist of Pretty Lights and only band member, is an electronica dance artist who has become vastly popular over the years. Featuring various hip hop lyrics, and styles of beat he also incorporates various genres, ranging from soul to vintage funk to glitchy electronica. If this sounds up your alley, give “City of One” or “Electro Cali” a listen to.
