Thomas Wesley Pentz (aka Diplo) was born in Tupelo, Mississippi. Before becoming one of the best genre-blending DJs in the industry, Diplo spent most of his childhood in Florida working in his father’s bait shop. As a child, he always dreamt of dinosaurs living within the Florida swamps; his favorite was the Diplodocus, hence his alias name. After his season out on the shrimp boats, he set out to find a higher calling and escaped to Philly where he teamed up with DJ Low Budget to create the influential Hollertronix, a nightclub and music collective. This was the beginning of his promising career as Diplo. Quickly after his debut into the music industry, he partnered with many upcoming and notorious artists such as M.I.A., Santigold, Lil’ Jon, and Missy Elliot. He started his own record label, Mad Decent, as well as an affiliate non-profit organization, Heaps Decent. In 2008, Diplo collaborated with Dave Taylor (aka Switch) and started a Jamacian dancehall project titled: Major Lazer. Since then, Diplo has worked with many notable pop artists like Beyonce, No Doubt, and Usher. His label is quickly becoming the mecca of big-name DJs such as Zeds Dead, Flosstradamus, Rusko, Crookers, and Dillon Francis. Diplo’s “Express Yourself” Campaign has been one of the biggest social media internet phenomenons of the century, close behind Gangnam Style and Harlem Shake. From electro house to hip hop, moombahton to Brazilian baile funk, and fishing to film, Diplo has shown a wide range of creative interests which has him standing as one of the most diverse and talented record label owner, producer, and DJ of the time.
